The photography workflow has always involved a significant amount of work that happens before and after the shutter clicks. AI is changing several of these steps in ways that are worth understanding clearly.
Pre-Production: Planning and Scouting
Location research has become faster with AI tools. Photographers can use AI-powered search to find location references, understand lighting conditions at different times of day, and research permit requirements for specific locations. Tools like Google's AI-enhanced search and dedicated photography planning apps can surface relevant information more quickly than traditional research.
Shot planning is an area where AI tools are beginning to assist. Some photographers use AI to generate shot lists based on the brief, identify potential compositions, and plan the sequence of a shoot. The output still requires the photographer's judgment — AI tools don't understand the specific dynamics of a client relationship or the way a particular subject moves — but they can accelerate the planning process.
Weather and lighting prediction tools have improved significantly. Apps that predict golden hour timing, cloud cover, and atmospheric conditions with greater accuracy help photographers plan outdoor shoots more reliably.
Culling

Website copy and SEO are areas where AI writing tools can help photographers who find written communication challenging. A well-written website that clearly describes the photographer's style and services is important for attracting the right clients.
What AI Cannot Do
See the moment. The decisive moment — the fraction of a second that makes a great photograph — requires a human being with a camera in the right place at the right time. AI tools can help photographers prepare for that moment, but they cannot replace the judgment and presence required to capture it.
Build client relationships. Photography clients — particularly wedding and portrait clients — choose their photographer based on trust and personal connection. That relationship is built through conversation, empathy, and the experience of working together. No AI tool can replicate it.
Develop a visual voice. A photographer's distinctive visual style — the way they see light, compose a frame, and respond to their subject — is developed over years of practice and reflection. AI tools can assist with technical tasks, but they cannot develop a visual voice on a photographer's behalf.
