Meeting minutes and project records. AI transcription tools can transcribe and summarise project meetings, producing a record that can be reviewed and approved by the architect. This reduces the time spent on administrative documentation.


The NCC and AI

The National Construction Code is a complex document that is updated regularly. AI tools can help architects navigate the NCC — searching for relevant provisions, summarising requirements, and identifying applicable clauses. However, AI tools can make errors in interpreting NCC requirements, and the consequences of a compliance error can be significant.

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB), which administers the NCC, provides authoritative guidance on NCC interpretation. Any AI-assisted NCC research should be verified against the primary source document and, where there is uncertainty, specialist advice should be sought.


BIM and AI

For architects who want to start using AI tools in their documentation workflow, a few practical starting points:

Specification drafting: Use ChatGPT or Claude to generate first drafts of specification sections for common elements — concrete, structural steel, waterproofing, external cladding. Review carefully against the relevant Australian Standards before using.

Planning application writing: Use AI tools to draft design rationale statements and heritage impact statement summaries. The AI can help with structure and language; the content must come from your professional analysis.

Contract administration: Use AI tools to draft RFI responses and site instruction letters. Review carefully before issuing — these are legal documents.

Meeting transcription: Use Otter.ai or similar tools to transcribe and summarise project meetings. Review and approve the summary before distributing.

The Bigger Picture

AI tools are not going to replace the architect's professional judgment, design skill, or legal responsibility. What they can do is reduce the time spent on routine documentation tasks, freeing up more time for the work that requires the architect's expertise — design thinking, client relationships, and the exercise of professional judgment.

The practices that will benefit most from AI tools are those that approach them strategically — identifying the specific tasks where AI provides genuine time savings, implementing those tools carefully, and maintaining the professional standards that registration requires.
